These systems are specifically programmed to perform certain functions and do not possess general intelligence or the ability to understand or apply knowledge beyond their specific programmed area. Examples are speech recognition, image recognition, and recommendation systems.
Generative AI: Generative AI refers to a subset of AI technologies that can generate new content, ranging from text to images, music, and more, based on the training data they have been fed. This type of AI learns patterns and features from large datasets and uses this knowledge to create original outputs. Examples are deep learning models that generate realistic images, text-to-speech systems, and music composition AI. ChatGPT is another example of Generative AI.
Process AI: Process AI, aka Workflow Automation, often involved in business process automation (BPA), refers to AI systems designed to manage, automate, and optimize business processes. These AI tools are used to streamline operations by automating routine and repetitive tasks, thereby improving efficiency and reducing the need for human intervention. This can lead to wasted resources or dangerous breaches, respectively. Balancing the sensitivity of AI systems to minimize both types of errors is crucial but challenging.

The breach was a direct result of the company’s failure to implement the necessary patches on vulnerable systems within its dispute resolution website. Equifax had deployed an automated vulnerability management system, which utilized AI technology to detect vulnerabilities and determine the urgency of applying patches. The primary issue in this scenario was an over-reliance on AI, without human oversight to verify or override the AI’s decisions. This incident underscores the limitations of AI in understanding context, highlighting the need for hybrid models that blend AI capabilities with human judgment and insights.
Initial Intrusion: Attackers exploited the unpatched Apache Struts vulnerability to gain unauthorized access to Equifax’s network in May 2017. Once inside, they were able to navigate the network and gain access to additional databases.
Data Extraction: Over the course of several months, the attackers extracted large amounts of personal data, including Social Security numbers, birth dates, addresses, and, in some cases, driver’s license numbers and credit card information. The extraction of data went unnoticed during this period due to insufficient security measures and monitoring.
Delayed Discovery and Response: Equifax did not detect the breach until July 29, 2017, almost two months after the initial intrusion. The public and affected consumers were not notified until September 7, 2017, which raised significant concerns and criticisms regarding the delayed response.
Consequences and Repercussions: The breach had widespread repercussions for consumers, leading to numerous lawsuits and government investigations. It highlighted the importance of cybersecurity practices for protecting sensitive personal information. Equifax faced significant financial penalties and was required to improve its security practices. The breach also led to the resignation of its CEO and other executives.
Case study: Amazon AI-Driven Recruiting Tool
In 2018, Amazon faced a significant controversy related to its use of an AI-driven recruiting tool that inadvertently exhibited bias against women.
Development and Deployment: Amazon developed an artificial intelligence program intended to automate the screening of job applications. The goal was to streamline the hiring process by quickly identifying the most promising candidates based on resumes submitted over a 10-year period.
Bias in AI: The AI system started to exhibit biases against female candidates. This issue stemmed from the AI learning from data patterns in resumes submitted to the company over the past decade, which predominantly came from men, reflecting male dominance in the tech industry. The AI model, therefore, inadvertently taught itself that male candidates were preferable, leading to a gender-biased selection process.
Detection and Response: Amazon’s team noticed that the recruitment tool was not rating candidates in a gender-neutral way. For instance, the AI downgraded resumes that included the word “women’s,” as in “women’s chess club captain.” Likewise, candidates graduating from all-women’s colleges were also penalized. The system had also learned to favor certain verb usages more commonly found in male candidates’ resumes.
Amazon’s Actions: Upon discovering these biases, Amazon altered the programs to make them neutral to these specific gendered terms and inputs. However, they could not guarantee that the system would not devise other ways to sift out female candidates or that it would treat gender fairly, as biases could be embedded in subtler patterns not explicitly corrected for.
Ultimately, Amazon discontinued the program in 2017 before it was ever deployed in actual hiring. The incident highlighted the significant challenges and risks associated with AI in recruitment and raised broader concerns about AI ethics and the need for careful oversight and testing, particularly concerning fairness and discrimination.
